Creating Spaces That Spark Joy: The Art of Personalized Interior Design
Our founder and principal designer, Nicole Roe, recently joined host Lee Kantor on High Velocity Radio to share her story and her approach to creating authentic, functional luxury through design.
With a background in building construction from Georgia Tech and over 15 years of experience, Nicole brings a unique combination of technical expertise and creative vision to R. Nickson Interiors. In the interview, she opens up about her journey, the philosophy behind her work, and the impact design can have on both residential and commercial spaces.
From Construction to Interiors
Nicole’s career began in construction, where she discovered her love of the job site, process, and problem-solving. But it was during an internship with a luxury developer in Atlanta that she realized the power of interiors to transform not just spaces—but the way people feel in them.
“I’ve always been someone deeply affected by my surroundings—the colors, the light, the way a room feels. Design isn’t just about pretty things, it’s about shaping how people live and experience their life.”
Moving Beyond “Builder Basic”
Many of R. Nickson’s clients are successful professionals who invest heavily in their careers and personal image, but often live in homes that feel impersonal. Nicole shares simple ways to change that: display meaningful collections, invest in artwork, or incorporate elements from the places and activities you love. These thoughtful details make a space feel like you.
Residential and Commercial Design
Two-thirds of R. Nickson Interiors’ projects are residential, while the rest span commercial spaces such as dental offices, med spas, and boutique offices. Nicole explains that no matter the type of project, the goal is the same: create an environment that supports how people live and work, while reflecting their personal or brand identity.
Her technical knowledge allows her to collaborate seamlessly with contractors and architects, ensuring both design integrity and functionality.
A Project That Came Full Circle
In one memorable project, Nicole redesigned a Gulf Coast home for a former boss. What started as a fishing getaway became a personalized retreat, complete with custom renovations and full furnishings. The transformation was so meaningful that her client now spends most of his time there—and has even hosted weddings, business retreats, and countless fishing trips.
Why It Matters
Nicole believes great design should never be surface level—it should elevate everyday life.
“You deserve a space that functions for you. Our role is to remove the overwhelm of the process and create a home that reflects your success and supports the way you want to live.”
