Season Two Kickoff: The Power of Friendship, Safe Spaces, and Fresh Starts
Featuring Antonio Deloatch, Founder of Antonio Deloatch Designs
Season Two of Highly Affected by Her Surroundings is here, and I couldn’t think of a better way to begin than with my dear friend and creative partner-in-crime, Antonio Deloatch of Antonio Deloatch Designs
Antonio joined me for the very first episode of Season One, and it only felt right to bring him back as we open this next chapter. Together, we talk about what it means to design and live with intention, how our spaces can protect, restore, and reenergize us when the world outside feels heavy.
This episode is part conversation, part reflection, and full of laughter, honesty, and creative insight.
A Conversation About Safe Spaces and Fresh Starts
As designers, we spend our lives shaping how others experience space, yet so often our own surroundings become an afterthought. Antonio and I explore the idea of creating what he calls a “nurture nest”, a home that not only looks beautiful but feels safe and grounded.
We also touch on the importance of rest and how it often takes a hard stop (or a little divine intervention) to remind us to slow down. Antonio’s story of recovery and reset after a demanding summer was a powerful reminder that even the most creative seasons require balance.
From there, our conversation expands to the concept of micro-environments, the idea that every scent, texture, and piece of art carries its own emotional influence. Whether it’s a favorite candle, a layer of drapery, or a photograph that captures a fleeting moment, these details shape the energy of a space far beyond what’s visible.
On Travel, Creativity, and Friendship
This summer, Antonio spent several weeks traveling through London, Lisbon, Paris, and the South of France, a trip that became both a creative awakening and a much-needed pause. We talk about how travel refills the creative well and how stepping away from work (intentionally) makes us better designers when we return.
We also reflect on friendship in this industry. True connection is rare, and yet, it’s one of the most essential parts of building a sustainable design career. Having someone who understands the challenges, celebrates the wins, and keeps you grounded is invaluable.
Looking Ahead
Season Two will continue exploring the relationship between environment and emotion, through conversations with artists, architects, energy readers, and fellow designers from across the country. Each guest brings a fresh perspective on how surroundings shape our creativity and sense of well-being.
Whether we’re talking about color palettes or human connection, it all comes back to the same idea: our surroundings affect how we feel, how we create, and how we show up in the world.
