Expanded Grove House
Square Footage: 500
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 2
Additional Rooms: Kids playroom, garage, adult game room
Project Type: Second Phase Renovation
Client Brief:
The clients wanted to transform their vacation home into their primary residence, necessitating added functionality and square footage. Since purchasing the home, the family welcomed another daughter, creating a need for separate children’s bedrooms and bathrooms.
The daughters’ bedrooms are connected by a pass-through bathroom. Each girl has her own closet and vanity area, with a shared wet room that includes a deep soaking tub, shower, and toilet. We designed the bedrooms with ample storage and incorporated fun wallpapers and custom built-ins to ensure the spaces can grow with them.
We also included a flex space accessible from the large hallway, designed as a bigger kids' hangout room. This area features a rope tunnel and landing, a loft, and rock climbing elements. The connecting space between the main house and the addition serves as a homework and storage zone for the children.
Adjacent to the children’s spaces is the large game room. Initially planned as a separate party barn, we decided it would be more functional if connected to the main house. French doors with ribbed glass and a keypad allow the room to be secured when not in use. The game room boasts metallic green wallpaper, deep green walls and trim, rich dark wood vaulted ceilings, and brass lighting and hardware. It features a golf simulator on one side and a custom pill-shaped bar in the center, equipped with dual wine fridges, a full refrigerator, microwave, open shelving, and a sink. An oversized U-sectional and TV create a cozy lounging area, while the game area includes pinball and a custom bridge table. The full patio offers seating with views of the lake and oak trees, and a moody powder bath adds a stylish touch.
Additionally, the primary suite, which was not renovated during the first phase, needed significant functional improvements. The existing vanities, storage, and shower were insufficient, and there was a need for additional closet space. Our goal was to create a show-stopping space that is easy to maintain and will remain relevant for years to come.
The next area is the guest suite, followed by two double garages with front and back access. Additionally, we updated the exterior landscaping and driveway to enhance the home's curb appeal.
Inspiration for the project:
The clients were very trusting with the direction of the project. Having lived in Atlanta for years, they were open to taking larger risks and making bold choices, unlike the more conservative styles often seen in Central Florida. The inspiration for this project was "Functional Luxury." We aimed to create a stunning space where they could entertain friends and family for years to come, evoking the ambiance and sophistication of a high-end lounge.
Unique Additions
For the game room, we incorporated rich wood tongue-and-groove on the vaulted ceiling and deep green trim and walls. This combination instantly creates a moody and cozy atmosphere. Despite the room's large size, the richness of these materials prevents it from feeling too enclosed, striking the perfect balance between warmth and spaciousness.
In the primary suite, we used large porcelain slabs in the shower and mirrored them on the vanity counter. Additionally, we installed large sheets of white oak veneer behind the mirror, achieving a cohesive and luxurious look. The repetition of oversized materials in this space was particularly impactful, providing a sense of grandeur and continuity.
