4 Things You Should Do Before Renovating Any Room in Your Home

@rnicksoninteriors You might “just be renovating a bathroom” but you need to do these four things first. #renovationproject #renovatehouse #art #diyproject ♬ Swear By It - Chris Alan Lee

Before any demo begins, there are a few essential steps I recommend to every client. These simple preparations can protect your belongings, reduce stress, and help your renovation run more smoothly from start to finish.

Here are four things you need to do before you renovate any space in your home:

1. Take Down All the Light Fixtures

Even if you're planning to keep them, your fixtures should come down before the work begins. Renovation involves movement, ladders, and tools, and it's far too easy for a fixture to get bumped or broken. Pack them carefully and store them somewhere safe until it's time to reinstall.

2. Remove All Artwork

Even securely mounted pieces can fall when the walls start to vibrate from power tools. Protect your art by taking it down, wrapping it properly, and keeping it away from the construction zone. This also helps prevent dust and debris from settling on the surface.

3. Move All the Rugs

Rugs tend to collect dust and can easily be damaged by foot traffic or falling tools. They're also a trip hazard for contractors coming in and out of the space. Roll up your rugs, wrap them in plastic or cloth, and store them in a clean, dry area until the renovation is complete.

4. Be Prepared for Dust

Even with the cleanest contractors, dust is part of the process. Cover nearby furniture, seal off adjoining rooms with painter's plastic, and use an air purifier if you can. Most importantly, give yourself and your family grace. Renovation is messy, but it leads to something beautiful.

Renovating a room is a big investment, and starting with the right prep work makes all the difference. If you're dreaming of a space that feels fresh, functional, and beautifully designed, I’d love to help guide you through the process.
